DJI Pocket 3 : the ultimate mini vlog camera!

The DJI Osmo Pocket 3 is a pocket-sized camera mounted on a 3-axis gimbal. Stabilized and highly maneuverable, this combination makes it an excellent vlogging camera. The DJI Osmo Pocket 3 features a 1-inch sensor and can film in up to 4K at 120 frames per second.

In front of this sensor, a lens with an f/2.0 aperture lets in a large amount of light, resulting in images of excellent quality!

Ideal for filming your travels , adventures, and walks, it will be especially appreciated by vloggers, influencers, and content creators. In addition to landscape mode, it can film in vertical and even square formats, two ratios particularly useful for social media.

Rich in audiovisual and smart features, the camera can, for example, thanks to ActiveTrack 6.0, frame and track a moving target brilliantly (a face, a person, a car, a monument, in short, any object).

DJI Pocket 3: the ultimate mini vlog camera!

As a reminder, the DJI Osmo Pocket 3 is a rather special camera for two reasons:

  1. Firstly, the camera itself of the DJI Pocket 3 is mounted on a 3-axis stabilized gimbal. This allows the user to have consistently well-framed shots, and above all, without motion blur and/or vibrations.
  2. Secondly, the DJI Pocket 3 is ultra-compact. In practical terms, it can be held in one hand and controlled with the thumb. It is therefore ideal for travel, vlogging, and can even be suitable for moderately action-packed situations.

Let’s go into more detail about the features of the DJI Pocket 3!

Audiovisual aspects

DJI Osmo Pocket 3 camera sensor

The DJI Pocket 3 is equipped with a 1″ CMOS sensor camera and an f/2.0 aperture lens (with a 20mm equivalent zoom). This ultra-wide-angle lens allows it to focus on objects as close as 20cm from the camera.

This camera is mounted on a 3-axis gimbal and is therefore fully stabilized. With very wide movements, it will be possible to move the camera on the different axes, as follows:

  • From -240° to +63° for the panoramic axis
  • From -180° to +98° for the tilt
  • From -220° to +63° for roll

With SpinShot, you can rotate your camera 180° with one click, for dynamic/stunning videos.

DJI Pocket 3

In terms of settings, the DJI Pocket 3 camera is very flexible. You can manually adjust the ISO between 50 and 6400 for photos, videos, and even slow motion. For low-light videos (night mode), the ISO range is from 50 to 16000. Shutter speed is also manually adjustable between 1/8000 s and 1 second, ideal for managing the exposure triangle and/or creating specific slow-motion effects (in addition to the dedicated slow-motion function). In Pro mode, you can even adjust white balance, exposure, color, noise reduction, focus mode, and directional audio.

The DJI Pocket 3 is equipped with three microphones , allowing it to brilliantly capture ambient sounds! The quality is quite good, as the audio is recorded at 48 kHz / 16-bit, in AAC. The recorded sound is stereo/panoramic, ideal for those who want to preserve the immersive feel of their footage even after editing with video editing software.

Note  : thanks to its USB port, but also via a 3.5mm jack, it is possible to connect any type of external microphone to the DJI Pocket 3.

DJI Osmo Pocket compact (simply folds up)

The DJI Pocket 3 is capable of taking photos in JPEG/RAW and will record in .MP4 (H.264 or H.265 (HEVC)) . Furthermore, in video mode, it is possible to fully exploit the sensor’s capabilities by recording using the advanced color modes HLG & D-Log M. These “flat” modes allow for a greater amount of data, in exchange for color desaturation during recording.

It is possible through calibration to recover its color and to have an image of superior quality than it would have been via normal mode, but in addition to that, the colorimetric modifications will be much finer and go much further than with the classic mode.

The DJI Pocket 3 allows the user to zoom in on the image whether in photo or video mode . For photos, in 16:9 (3840 x 2160 (4K)) resolution, it is possible to zoom up to 2x. For video:

  • In 4K, the DJI Pocket 3 can zoom up to x2;
  • In 2.7K, the DJI Pocket 3 can zoom up to x3;
  • In 1080p, the DJI Pocket 3 can zoom up to x4.

Finally, for UVC cameras and live streaming, it is possible to film and zoom up to x4 in 1080p.

Note  : no zoom for timelapses or slow motion, however.

As for photography, the DJI Osmo Pocket 3 can record images in 16:9 or 1:1 aspect ratio, with resolutions of 3840 x 2160 and 3072 x 3072 respectively. Approximately 9.4 megapixels are used. In addition to basic photography, the DJI Pocket 3 can capture 180° panoramas or wide-angle (3×3) photos , as well as time-lapse photos (countdown) with delays of 3, 5, or 7 seconds.

DJI Osmo Pocket 3 video definition

Numerous video resolutions are available on the DJI Pocket 3 , meeting current shooting standards. First, note that it’s possible to film in 16:9, but also in 1:1 and 9:16, ideal for social media platforms that are smartphone-oriented and therefore favor square and vertical formats  ! Specifically, the video resolutions are as follows:

  1. For the 16:9 image format, the DJI Pocket 3 can film in:
    1. 4K at 24, 25, 30, 48, 50 or 60 frames per second;
    2. 7K at 24, 25, 30, 48, 50 or 60 frames per second;
    3. 1080 at 24, 25, 30, 48, 50 or 60 frames per second;
  2. For the 9:16 vertical image format, the DJI Osmo Pocket 3 can film in:
    1. 3K at 24, 25, 30, 48, 50 or 60 frames per second;
    2. 7K at 24, 25, 30, 48, 50 or 60 frames per second;
    3. 1080p at 24, 25, 30, 48, 50 or 60 frames per second;
  3. For the 1:1 square image format, the DJI Osmo Pocket 3 can film in:
    1. 3K (3072 x 3072) at 24, 25, 30, 48, 50 or 60 frames per second;
    2. 2160 x 2160 at 24, 25, 30, 48, 50 or 60 frames per second;
    3. 1080 x 1080 at 24, 25, 30, 48, 50 or 60 frames per second.

DJI Osmo Pocket 3 Slow Motion

In night mode (video), the DJI Pocket 3 is capable of filming in 4K (16:9) at 24, 25 or 30 fps or in 1080p, also at 24, 25 or 30 frames per second.

The DJI Pocket 3 is also capable of producing slow-motion videos itself, by filming at a higher frame rate:

  1. In 4K and 2.7K, the DJI Pocket 3 can reach 120 FPS, allowing it to produce 4x slow motion.
  2. In 1080p, it is possible to choose 120 FPS or 240 FPS, which means that it is possible to produce x4 and even x8 slow motion!

Finally, note that the DJI Pocket 3 is capable of producing various timelapses . It can perform classic timelapses, as well as hyperlapse and even motionlapse. Fully customizable through the DJI Mimo app, DJI Pocket 3 timelapses can be 4K, 2.7K, or 1080p. You can define the interval between photos and the timelapse duration, as well as adjust positions in the case of motionlapse, or set a playback speed level in the case of hyperlapse.

Physical part

We mentioned that the Pocket 3 is an extremely compact camera . More specifically, it measures only 139.7 x 42.2 x 33.5 mm (L x W x H) and weighs just 179 grams. It’s incredibly easy and comfortable to hold. And the ease of use doesn’t stop there, as the DJI Pocket 3 is primarily controlled via a rotating touchscreen. This 2-inch screen has a resolution of 556 x 314. With a brightness of 700 nits, you can see what the camera sees, and you can also fully configure the DJI Osmo Pocket 3 and manage the device.

The DJI Pocket 3 features a 1300 mAh LiPo battery, allowing the device to operate for 166 minutes (2 hours and 46 minutes)  ! This high-performance battery can charge from 0 to 80% in just 80% of its capacity (with a 65W charger) and from 0% to 100% in 32 minutes!

DJI Pocket 3 Fast Charge

Note  : When the DJI Pocket 3 is at 100% charge, it can record in 4K at 60 FPS for 116 minutes!

For optimal charging performance, the ideal temperature is between 18°C and 25°C. The DJI Pocket 3 camera can operate in temperatures ranging from 0°C to 40°C, but it can charge between 5°C and 45°C.

Note that the DJI Pocket 3 does not have internal storage and will therefore require a microSD card. The DJI Pocket 3 supports cards with a capacity between 32 GB and 512 GB. Since the maximum bit rate of the DJI Pocket 3 is 130 Mb/s (16.25 MB/s), you will need a card capable of write speeds greater than 16.25 MB/s. You will therefore be looking at U3 or V30 type cards.

Smart features

Through the DJI Mimo app, you can filter your image live using Glamour 2.0 effects. This is ideal for facecam vloggers, who will no longer need to correct facial imperfections in post-production. Fully compatible with the activities of influencers and content creators (TikTok, Instagram, YouTube), the Pocket 3 will make you look your best.

The DJI Pocket 3 features an internal “full pixel” fast focusing function, allowing you to clearly see and capture your subject during the day. This is a PDAF (phase detection autofocus) system.

This internal feature is particularly noticeable during automatic target tracking via ActiveTrack 6.0. The DJI Pocket 3 incorporates a new version of the target tracking algorithms. With this version, tracking is at a higher level, especially framing, which will be of a professional standard while remaining flexible with respect to the speed of movement of the camera gimbal axes (180°/s maximum).

DJI Pocket 3 screen

To switch between photo/video recording and horizontal/vertical mode, simply rotate the DJI Pocket 3 screen 90° . You can also switch between vertical and horizontal modes via the camera’s menu.

Finally, a “product demonstration” mode, similar to portrait mode on smartphones, is included. It highlights the subject (usually an object) in the foreground and slightly blurs the background (bokeh), emphasizing your subject. It was designed for people who want to showcase objects in their videos.

The DJI Pocket 3, through the DJI Mimo application, can also be transformed into a webcam or even broadcast live for streaming (live – RMTP).
