DJI Osmo Action 4: already a standard

Osmo Action 4: Incredible image quality and smart features

The DJI Osmo Action 4 camera incorporates a 1/1.3” sensor with approximately 12 MP . Its wide-angle lens (FOV 155°) with an f/2.8 aperture allows it to capture plenty of light, resulting in high-quality images.

Thanks to this camera, the Osmo Action 4 can shoot video in 4K60fps (and even up to 4K120fps for 4x slow motion). Of course, other video resolutions are available:

• Standard video (x1)
  • 4K ( 4:3 OR 16:9 , 3840 x 2880 OR 3840 x 2160 ) at 24, 25, 30, 48, 50 or 60 fps
  • 2.7K ( 4:3 OR 16:9 , 2688 x 2016 OR 2688 x 1512 ) at 24, 25, 30, 48, 50 or 60 fps
  • 1080p ( 16:9 only ,  1920 x 1080 ) at 24, 25, 30, 48, 50 or 60 fps
• Slow motion (x4 or x8)
  • 4K ( 16:9 only , 3840 x 2160 ) at 100 or 120 fps
  • 2.7K ( 16:9 , 2688 x 1512 ) at 100 or 120 fps
  • 1080p ( 16:9 only ,  1920 x 1080 ) at 100, 120, 200 or 240 fps

In addition to standard recording and slow motion, the DJI Osmo Action 4 camera can perform the following:

• Hyperlapses in 4K, 2.7K or 1080p (automatic speed, x2, x5, x10, x15 or x30) .
• 4K , 2.7K or 1080p timelapses  at 30 fps, with adjustable intervals or total duration:
  • For the interval, a photo can be taken every 0.5, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 8, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30 or 40 seconds
  • As for the duration, it can be defined as 5, 10, 20, 30 min; 1, 2, 3 or 5 hours; or indefinite (infinite)

Furthermore, the DJI Action 4 can be adjusted in several ways:

• It is capable of digitally zooming in on the image: x4 (Photo) & x2 (Video)
• It can adjust its ISO from 100 to 12800 (in both photo and video modes)
• It can adjust its shutter speed between 1/8000 and 30 seconds.

Of course, the camera is also capable of taking classic, instant, or countdown photos (in JPEG as well as RAW). It will record in MP4 format (in H.264 or H.265) and has sound recording capabilities thanks to its 3 built-in microphones (with an accessory (3.5mm adapter), it is even possible to connect an external microphone).

Regarding its stabilization, the camera incorporates various intelligent algorithms:

1. RockSteady 3.0: it provides overall image stabilization, even during 4K slow motion at 120 fps.
2. RockStady 3.0+: it allows for exceptional stabilization, but does not work with slow-motion videos.
3. HorizonSteady: it allows you to completely stabilize the horizon and thus limits camera tilt variations (supports 2.7K videos at best)
4. Horizon Balancing: it allows you to stabilize the horizon completely up to + or – 45°, but also works on 4K videos at 60 fps.

Action 4: an action camera with unusual durability

Lightweight (145 grams) and compact (70.5 x 44.2 x 32.8 mm), the DJI Osmo Action 3 has the form factor of a classic action camera . Yet, in terms of durability, it far surpasses what is currently available on the market. 

Indeed, to begin with, it can operate from -20°C to +45°C , meaning it will accompany you in winter as well as summer, in the high mountains as well as at the beach. This camera is far from afraid of water, as it is inherently waterproof and can operate at depths of up to 18 meters without any additional equipment. With its waterproof case, it can even reach 60 meters. Finally, the lens, as well as the front and rear screens ( 1.4″ 320 x 320 and 2.25″ 640 x 360 respectively ), are made of Gorilla Glass, an extremely robust glass.

In addition to being durable, the DJI Action 4 is long-lasting and will operate for 160 minutes ( 2 hours and 40 minutes of flight time ). This is possible thanks to its intelligent 1S LiPo battery, with a capacity of 1770 mAh, an extremely efficient battery that can reach 80% of its capacity in just 18 minutes of charging.

Note: To maintain their integrity, the batteries of the DJI Osmo Action 4 must be recharged in an environment with an ambient temperature between +5°C and +40°C.

DJI Action 4: Fabulous software connectivity & accessory ecosystem

In terms of connectivity, the camera integrates Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. These two connectivity systems allow it to transmit its recorded images and videos to various systems (smartphones, computers, social networks).

Of course, it is possible to retrieve images from your camera via a cable, as well as through its microSD card (which is mandatory because the camera does not have internal storage space) which you simply need to retrieve and put through a microSD to SD card adapter, since you put this adapter in your computer.

PS: The DJI Osmo Action 4 camera can support microSD cards with a capacity between 32GB and 512GB.

Let’s take advantage of this digression on microSD to discuss the accessory ecosystem of the DJI Action 4.

First of all , the DJI Action 4 comes standard with a special frame/protective cage/cage, which allows you to switch from horizontal to vertical mounting mode in seconds. This cage has accessory mounting points on its bottom and one of its sides.

       

Also, the DJI Osmo Action 4 comes with some interesting new accessories, such as the GPS remote control which allows remote control without a camera, without having to touch it directly.
